You have too many large files Images and other forms of rich content are data heavy, which means it takes longer to load them. If you have too many large, uncompressed images on key pages, it will take longer to load your site. Be sure to resize images before you upload them to your site. One other point—limiting large files on your site could actually enhance user experience, since those images sometimes distract site visitors.
Your files aren’t compressed You’re probably familiar with the concept of “zipping” large files when you send them over a network—in fact, you’ve probably done it at one time or another. You can do the same with your website with a process called gzip. Using gzip, you can compress all your large files before they go to the user’s browser. This can substantially reduce load time.
Your site has too many DNS lookups To load your site, a web browser connects its IP address with its domain name through what’s called a “DNS lookup.” That process is typically fast, but if you have too many external resources on your site (for example, links to YouTube or Twitter), the browser needs to repeat the DNS lookup process multiple times—and that makes it take longer for your site to load.
Your site has too many broken links You’ve probably experienced clicking on a website link and being taken to a site page that doesn’t exist (the dreaded “404” message, in other words). This is a “broken link.” Broken links hurt user experience—but they also slow load time. To get things moving again, remove these broken links.
Your web host is slow If your site is taking too long to load, the problem might not be with your website—it might be with you hosting provider (and of course, the problem could be both your site and your host). You need to contact your host to make sure the problem isn’t on their end and, if it is, either get them to fix it or find a new host.
There’s many plugins on the market today for WordPress websites that will quickly speed up your website and cache (store) your files to speed up loading of pages. A CDN is another method for speeding up your website which involves routing your websites’ DNS through a third party which also adds to security for your website hosting.
