Content marketing is the practice of creating useful, relevant content that attracts potential customers to your business. Instead of interrupting people with ads, you create content that answers their questions and solves their problems. When they need the service you provide, you are already the trusted expert in their mind.

Why Content Marketing Works for Small Businesses

The math behind content marketing is compelling. A blog post you write today can drive traffic to your website for years. Compare that to a Google Ad that stops generating clicks the moment you stop paying.

HubSpot data shows that businesses that blog regularly get 55% more website visitors and 67% more leads than businesses that do not blog. For small businesses with limited marketing budgets, content marketing offers one of the highest returns on investment available.

Content marketing also builds authority and trust. When a homeowner in Minneapolis searches “how to tell if my roof needs replacing” and finds a detailed, helpful article on your website, they are far more likely to call you when they decide to get the work done. You have already demonstrated your expertise before they ever picked up the phone.

What Kind of Content Should You Create?

The best content for small businesses answers the questions your customers are already asking. Think about the questions you hear most often from customers and prospects. Those are your content topics.

How-to guides. “How to prepare your furnace for winter” or “How to choose a contractor for your kitchen remodel.” These attract people in the research phase who will eventually need your services.

Comparison content. “Asphalt vs. metal roofing: which is right for your Minnesota home?” People actively comparing options are closer to making a purchase decision.

Local content. “Best neighborhoods for first-time homebuyers in Minneapolis” or “Understanding Minneapolis building permit requirements.” Local content ranks well in local searches and establishes you as a local authority.

Case studies. Show your work. Before and after photos, project descriptions, challenges you solved and results you delivered. This is the most persuasive content you can create because it proves you can do what you say you can do.

FAQ content. Take your most frequently asked questions and turn each one into a detailed blog post. “How much does a new roof cost in Minnesota?” is a search query with real volume that you can rank for.

How Often Should You Publish?

Consistency matters more than frequency. Publishing one quality blog post per month is better than publishing four posts in January and nothing for the rest of the year.

For most small businesses, we recommend starting with two posts per month. That is enough to build momentum without overwhelming your schedule. Each post should be 800 to 1,500 words and thoroughly cover the topic.

Quality always beats quantity. A single well-researched, detailed post that genuinely helps readers will outperform ten thin, generic posts. Google rewards depth and expertise.

Writing Content That Ranks in Google

Creating content is only half the equation. You also need that content to show up in Google search results. Here are the SEO basics for blog content:

Target specific keywords. Each post should target a specific search query. Use tools like Google’s “People Also Ask” section, AnswerThePublic or Ubersuggest to find questions people are searching for in your industry.

Use your keyword naturally. Include your target keyword in the title, the first paragraph, at least one subheading and a few times throughout the body. But write for humans first. If it sounds forced, rewrite it.

Structure with headings. Use H2 and H3 headings to break your content into scannable sections. This helps both readers and Google understand the structure of your content.

Internal linking. Link to your service pages and other relevant blog posts within your content. If you write about roof maintenance, link to your roofing services page. This helps Google understand the relationship between your pages and passes authority from your blog to your service pages.

Add images. Posts with relevant images get more engagement and can rank in Google Image search. Use real photos of your work whenever possible. Add descriptive alt text to every image.

Content You Should NOT Create

Not all content is worth creating. Avoid these common mistakes:

Generic industry news. Unless you are adding original analysis or a local angle, regurgitating industry news does not help your SEO or your customers.

Content that is too short. Posts under 300 words rarely rank in Google and do not provide enough value to readers. If you cannot write at least 800 words on a topic, it might not be worth a standalone post.

Content about topics you do not want to rank for. Every post should connect back to a service you offer. A plumber writing about gardening tips is wasting their time.

AI-generated content without editing. Google can detect low-quality AI content and it will not rank. If you use AI as a starting point, you need to heavily edit, add your own expertise and include specific examples from your business.

Measuring Your Results

Content marketing is a long game. Do not expect results in the first month. Here is a realistic timeline:

Months 1-3: You are building a foundation. Traffic gains will be minimal but you are creating assets that will compound over time.

Months 3-6: Some posts start ranking on page 2 or the bottom of page 1. Traffic begins to grow.

Months 6-12: Your best posts reach page 1 for their target keywords. Organic traffic grows noticeably month over month.

Month 12+: The compound effect kicks in. Your older posts continue to drive traffic while new posts add to the total. This is where content marketing becomes your most cost-effective lead source.

Track your results in Google Analytics and Google Search Console. Monitor which posts drive the most traffic, which keywords you rank for and which posts generate the most leads.

Getting Started This Week

Here is your action plan:

  1. Write down the 10 questions your customers ask most often
  2. Pick the one you can answer most thoroughly
  3. Write an 800-1,200 word post answering that question
  4. Add 2-3 relevant images with alt text
  5. Link to your most relevant service page
  6. Publish it on your website’s blog
  7. Share it on your social media channels

Then do it again next month. And the month after that. Content marketing rewards consistency above all else.
